Are you wearing it right when you sweat?

Clothing is a crucial investment when it comes to fitness. "Enclothed cognition" proposes that the clothes we wear directly affects how we think and what we do.

Intense activities rely on circulation. Blood has to flow throughout the body to strength and power the muscles. That's what compression clothing such as sleeves, tights, socks, etc is for. It serves the dual purpose of helping transport blood/oxygen more efficiently – while being stylish athletic accessories. These garments are typically made of spandex or Lycra.

Comfort matters. We don't want to be in the middle of a strenuous activity and be distracted by itchiness, chafing, or even sore nipples that kept rubbing against the shirt like sandpaper! So don't underestimate the value of synthetics and other similar fabrics that are comfortable for workout.

The right kind of clothing motivates you and boosts your confidence — the two key aspects that make for a great start to a workout! Creating habits, such as exercising daily, can be difficult. You need to find a person, place or thing to motivate you. Workout clothes could be the perfect answer!

The simple act of putting on your favourite muscle shirt or gym shorts could trigger a cue in your brain that cue can signal the rest of your body that ‘hey, I have my workout clothes on, it’s time for a workout — let’s go!’.

Your workout clothes can also help protect you from the environment. If you’re planning to exercise outside in the summer when it’s hot, loose clothing and breathable fabrics are incredibly important. It’s going to help keep your body cool so you don’t get overheated. Plus, you’ll want to opt for lighter colors to reflect the sun’s rays away from your body.

How color can also play an important role

if you're involved in martial arts or contact sports, you'll want to consider the color of your uniform. Certain colors can make you and your team more aggressive. And appear more intimidating.

In football, research points out that the color black has proven to increase the competitive attitude of a team. And viewers who aren't football fans have been said to perceive the team in black as more intimidating during a match.

That was also the case with a study on 28 male combat fighters who wore either red or blue. They were all similar in size and age. But those wearing red reportedly had higher heart rates while fighting than those in blue. That didn't mean the red guys would always win. But the color itself seemed to slightly level-up their aggressiveness.

On the whole Whether it’s your favourite pair of gym tights, a muscle shirt or sports bra, workout clothes have a purpose. It could absorb away the sweat or provide you with more support. But, the most important aspect is motivating you through your workouts.

Achieving your fitness goals isn’t a one-stop-shop. It’s a lifestyle — but keeping up with that lifestyle can be quite difficult. You could lose some motivation and your willingness along the way. However, the simple act of putting on your right workout clothes and athleisure can motivate you through those tough low-energy days! So Dress like a champion…and you'll start to think and feel like a champion. That's the first step to becoming a winner. So next time when you hit the gym or workout keep this idea of color and clothing in mind.
